Dear LA Kings,

I want you to destroy the coyotes because they are

cause I don’t want them to be on the cup cause they don’t deserve it and I don’t want them to be on the same row as the hawks and if Raffi Torres is name is on the cup I will go ape shit.

P.S. If Coyotes do win the cup *knock on wood* does that mean Gary Bettman name be on the cup as well? Just wondering.

Sincerely

A hawks fan.

This past school year the Ontario government implemented the “School Food and Beverage Policy”. This policy strips students of the choice to eat an inordinate range of foods, as a result students have been eating at off-campus sites which has led to as much as 30-percent losses to some cafeteria vendors. A subsequent loss entailed for students as cafeteria vendors generally turn over part of the profits to the school’s principal who then uses it to fund clubs, sports, and support students from low-income households. The policy has put more of a dent in schools’ finances than in unhealthy eating habits. Furthermore the policy which is designed to guide students into healthy eating is forcing them into the very option it hopes to counter.

The general consensus among students is being demonstrated through the students who are voting with their feet. We will not accept being robbed of our choice. We have put together this video with the hopes of it gaining viral attention and thus pushing the hand of the Ontario government to review and amend the School Food and Beverage Policy.

Junk food ban the target of slick video made by Brampton high school students

Imagine a world where french fries are baked, cupcakes are made with whole grains and the only pop is diet.

That is the postapocalyptic low sodium and low sugar reality described by Brampton high school students in a video that protests the Ontario government’s “school food and beverage policy.”

“That’s not the Ontario I grew up in,” says Brian Baah, one of the frustrated St. Thomas Aquinas student council members behind the slick production, in the video. “That’s not the Ontario I believe in.”

The province-wide food policy was introduced at the beginning of this school year to fight childhood obesity. Food sold at schools must be nutritious — sugary and fatty snacks are banned.

“[The video] is not about bringing junk food back to school — it’s about choice,” said Samuel Battista, 18, the head of the student council and narrator of the video.

“If you want to educate people on making the right choices and the right decisions, how does it make sense if you’re just taking away all the choices?”

And besides, he argues, the policy isn’t working.

Students are just getting fast-food options outside of the school — which is bad news for the share of cafeteria profits schools count on, he said.

Battista and Baah want their video, which took about a month to film and edit, to go viral so the province might take another look at its legislation.

“You can’t just put things into the education system that affect students negatively without student backlash,” said Battista.

The video features strains of inspirational background tracks, a mix of eloquent and off-the-cuff student interviews at school, and shots of french fries, pizza, and students urging others to share the message on social media.

It’s shades of Kony 2012, without the public meltdown.

“We saw how effective that video was, maybe not in achieving its goals, but in gaining attention,” said Battista.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Education said this isn’t about limiting choice.

“Students can still choose to bring food and beverages from home and typically, secondary school students can choose to leave school property to purchase food and beverages off-site,” Gary Wheeler wrote in an email.

But the students lament that off-site purchases are driving down revenues for the school.

Earlier this year, the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, which has tracked the impact of the rules, said revenues are estimated to be down by 30 per cent in cafeterias.

Bruce Campbell, the spokesperson for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, said the students’ initiative is “relevant to the times.”

“In the past, you’d maybe look at a petition or a letter-writing campaign,” he said. “This video really speaks to the times we’re in.”

Campbell said the board doesn’t have numbers on lost revenue, but “certainly we’ve been made aware from some principals that revenues are down from cafeteria sales.”

Campbell said any first year of a policy change is “difficult for some to swallow, no pun intended.”

The bottom line, he said, is that this is a ministry policy the board is bound to comply with.

Wheeler said when it comes to health food options, the ministry has received support from boards, teachers, students and parents.

“There are no plans to review or revise the School Food and Beverage Policy or the nutrition Standards,” he wrote.
